SELECT FINDS FROM BYLAZORA 2009
a bird (left), and a
happy cow (above).
An iron pruning hook.
The base of a pot,
scratched with the
image of a man.
TFAHR Photo Album - 2009 Excavations at Bylazora (Sveti Nikole), Republic of Macedonia.
A guttus (oil pouring vessel).
A number of miniature vessels were
found, including this miniature black
glaze kantharos, missing its foot.
This cup was found broken, but was
reconstructed, photographed and drawn
by TFAHR volunteers.
This painted skyphos,
similar to one found in
2008, was pieced
together from fragments
found in the 2008 and
2009 seasons.
Another miniature vessel (right), a tiny imitation of a wine
pouring jug.  Miniature vessels are often described as
either grave goods, ritual objects - or perhaps even toys.
Over the 2009 season we found dozens of
loom weights, some stamped with images,
such as a simple Greek letter omega (lower
right).  But several loom weights bore the
image of a woman, perhaps the goddess
Athena, the patroness of the art of weaving
(upper right).
This strange item looks like a loom
weight.  But it was found  sliced
into 4 pieces.
Terracotta figurines
We found broken pieces of pottery with
remnants of powdered red pigment on
them.  We also discovered one small
fragment of red painted plaster; perhaps
the pigment was used for paint?
